“You can lie to yourself ‘bout it and say it’s nothin’,” she said with a slight shrug, glancing him up and down. “That doesn’t make it true, though. I wish it did.”

His chest puffed up a bit, eyes narrowing. ”Ain’t lyin’. It ain’t none of your business anyway… Just leave it be or what the fuck ever.” He glanced over to the shirt lying a few feet away, grabbing for it to cover himself up. It was only a mild relief when he felt fabric against his back again.

“You’d be really shitty at poker, y’know.”

She leaned back against a nearby wall as he put his shirt back on. Slowly, her heart was breaking into more and more pieces. Whatever happened to him, it must have been awful for him to act like this and bury it so deeply. Once his shirt was on, she reached forward and gently placed her hand on his shoulder for a brief moment.

“It’s not my business, you’re right,” she spoke quietly. “But I know it definitely wasn’t ‘nothing’ if those marks have you so defensive, and I care about you. You’re my friend, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t worry about you sometimes.”
